A alluring discovery was made in 1819 when an officer with the Madras regiment of the British army John Smith was in Pursual of a tiger crosswise the wasteland just outside of Mumbai. While hunting the tiger, he stumbled upon a enigmatic grotto with a eclipsed with a hidden entrance in the forest. They only saw just a one cave, but mysteriously it turned into 29 massive caves carved into the brook in the distant past, splendidly illuminated by mysterious masons.

Smith entered the cave while branding a flaming grass torch and discovered a massive vaulted and colonnaded hall, covered in beautiful yet faded painting. the more explored, the more beautiful the caves got. just beneath a dome, Smith, and his officers came across a timeless praying Buddha.
