D.K Shivakumar was born to Mr.Kempegowda and Mrs.Gowadamma of Dodda Alahalli village in Kanakapura taluk. He was a born leader and owing to his special interest in common men's affair and his philanthropic nature, he joined politics for the massive improvement. His leader ship qualities was conspicuous right from the days when he joined as a student leader in R.C Collage in Bangalore.
Later he joined in congress as he was actively interested in politics and has an visionary student leader. His leader ship qualities were again evident and elected as congress leader in 1983-85.
Shivakumar house and office was raided by income tax Department in connection with aliened tax irregulations case on August2nd 2017 Eagleton resort, near Bangaulur frequented by Shivakumar and owned by his brother D.K Suresh who was also raid as a part of investigation .
